- Master’s Degree with a focus on Special Education AND
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
- Full approval as a Michigan Director of Special Education
- Previous special education teaching experience required
- Previous K-12 administrative experience preferred
- Knowledge of or the ability to learn PowerSchool Special Education, OEAA Secure Site, Continuous Improvement Monitoring Systems (CIMS), and the Fastbridge
- Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and Positive Behavioral Supports and Interventions
- Strong understanding of Michigan State Standards, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), recent special education case law
- Trained, or willing to be trained in the 5D Teacher Evaluation Framework
- Excellent communication skills with students, staff, parents, administrators and community members
- Oversee all district Special Education programming, staffing, pupil count and compliance issues
- Supervise the 504 Process to ensure each building coordinator is aware of current law and district expectations
- Write and implement district policies to establish a systematic approach to the identification and implementation of IEPs.
- Advise district and school administration on Special Education issues including state and federal law and regulation
- Work collaboratively with the business office to manage Special Education funding, expenditures, and resources
- Mediate contentious IEP and complaint resolutions
- Oversee assessment implementation and accommodations for Special Education students
- Update the Superintendent and the Board of Education on applicable Special Education matters
- Evaluate the specialists (social workers, speech pathologists, school psychologists, and Teacher Consultant), and assist principals with the evaluations for the special
- Lead the process of hiring special education staff with the support of the building principals
- Manage the special education budget with the Director of Finance
- Serve as one of the Title IX Compliance Officers for the district
- Perform essential Job Functions as specified for this position including all physical requirements (standing, lifting, walking, etc.)
