    Director of Special Education

    Comstock Public Schools is seeking a dynamic leader who has the ability to initiate and implement practices that are focused on student growth, motivating others, and building positive relationships with students, staff, parents and the community. They will be responsible for establishing a safe, pleasant and effective educational atmosphere. If you have the ability and desire to work in a district that sets high expectations for all students and you meet the qualifications listed below, we extend an invitation to you to apply for the following position:

    POSITION: Director of Special Education

    AVAILABLE: July 1, 2022

    SALARY: $80,000-$90,000 (Depending on Experience)

    CERTIFICATION:
    • Master’s Degree with a focus on Special Education AND
    • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Full approval as a Michigan Director of Special Education
    • Previous special education teaching experience required
    • Previous K-12 administrative experience preferred
    • Knowledge of or the ability to learn PowerSchool Special Education, OEAA Secure Site, Continuous Improvement Monitoring Systems (CIMS), and the Fastbridge
    screening and progress monitoring system (Catamaran)
    • Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and Positive Behavioral Supports and Interventions
    • Strong understanding of Michigan State Standards, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), recent special education case law
    • Trained, or willing to be trained in the 5D Teacher Evaluation Framework
    • Excellent communication skills with students, staff, parents, administrators and community members

    RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
    • Oversee all district Special Education programming, staffing, pupil count and compliance issues
    • Supervise the 504 Process to ensure each building coordinator is aware of current law and district expectations
    • Write and implement district policies to establish a systematic approach to the identification and implementation of IEPs.
    • Advise district and school administration on Special Education issues including state and federal law and regulation
    • Work collaboratively with the business office to manage Special Education funding, expenditures, and resources
    • Mediate contentious IEP and complaint resolutions
    • Oversee assessment implementation and accommodations for Special Education students
    • Update the Superintendent and the Board of Education on applicable Special Education matters
    • Evaluate the specialists (social workers, speech pathologists, school psychologists, and Teacher Consultant), and assist principals with the evaluations for the special
    education staff
    • Lead the process of hiring special education staff with the support of the building principals
    • Manage the special education budget with the Director of Finance
    • Serve as one of the Title IX Compliance Officers for the district
    • Perform essential Job Functions as specified for this position including all physical requirements (standing, lifting, walking, etc.)
